尽管 德尔’s idyllic oceanfront setting, this little town just north of 圣地亚哥 was, in many ways, born around horses. 的 德尔马赛马场 was co-founded in the late 1930s by Bing Crosby, whose star power attracted an influx of his Hollywood peers 和 helped put the town on the map—sometimes rather literally. 的 road leading to the track 和 fairgrounds entrance is Jimmy Durante Boulevard, a homage to the raspy-voiced character actor who loved the place.

Racetrack season still runs every summer, as well as during November’s short 宾·克罗斯比季节. Opening Day in mid-July is one of the few times around mellow 圣地亚哥 when you see locals dressed to the nines, including a parade of fabulously impractical hats. For the rest of the year, the track’s home turf hosts festivals 和 events like June’s county fair.

Take a short walk from the fairgrounds to 观点酿酒有限公司., 德尔's first local brewery, where the tasting menu includes the house’s Red Rye IPA or the M和arina Pale Ale, paired with small plates; watch the sunset over the lagoon or play lawn games next to the outdoor patio. 

的 mile-long heart of 德尔 runs along State Highway 101, 就在铁轨的南边, with its mix of Tudor 和 西班牙语-style buildings. Along the way you’ll find plenty of places to eat, drink, or kick back, such as bistro Sbicca, the live music 和 cocktails at ozel的, 和 the open-air Cal-Mex at En Fuego酒吧 & 烧烤. 欣赏日落美景, grab a chair at the shopping-和-eatery-lined 德尔 Plaza (anchored by foodie-magnet 太平洋德尔), with its huge, elevated seating area.

People like the familiarity that they return to year after year.”

This commercial 和 residential community’s signature white cottages are home to such destination retailers as adventure-wear purveyor 罗克 和 Swedish outdoor-goods company Fjallraven, as well as household names like Lululemon 和 丝芙兰. Make a day of it by going on the guided 一条Paseo艺术步道 和 having a meal at a branch of Ayesha Curry’s 国际烟 or 哈兰德酝酿.
